8th and 9th day of filming

Reshoot

I reshot Luis' close up and parts of his mid shot that I was finding difficult to lip sync because towards the beginning of filming he did not know the words that well. Also for some reason a couple of shots from the narrative section have not turned up after importing them so I want to do them wednesday. I am also pleased to say that my digipak is complete. 

Nevertheless on the 8th filming session rob did not turn up so we decided to do it lunch the next day so that he had no reason not to make it as his escuse last time was he couldn't get a lift home. Fair enough he is paying for the privalidge of the school bus but again the communication is slacking I should have taken everyone's number at the beginning of the project. Even though rob forgot his costume the lunch we were filming he turned up and used his physical education kit and my friends jumper to cover logos. Although this was not the mise en scene I wanted I needed to get the filming done and so I even did the shot in the corridor with people there because I wanted to keep the continuity as I thought either my friend would have forgotten the jumper or rob would have forgotten either the PE kit or filming altogether and I could easily edit out the sound later  in post production. Anyway the day rob didn't come I managed to get to my d of e meeting at 5 and remade the VIP tickets which I lost last shooting session. This is the new design as I could not print in colour this time:

I also printed off a sheet of paper saying VIP only on it to hide the sign "drama studio 3" and increase the verismillitude of the project. 

Inspiration

While trying to lip sync the music video I wanted to see if there was a conventional order to the performance section and the narrative section. Then I found the above which is amazing because it gave me the motivation to continue editing because I did not realise how much time lip syncing takes when choosing my brief.

I also wanted to work out how to put the copy right symbol at the end of my music video as this is conventional and is in the Pixie Lott music video Nasty, so I looked it up and found this video tutorial:

7th and 8th day of filming

I finally got everyone together to film the scene when the protagonists meet the band - well I say that the audience assume I have due to the over the shoulder shot of Imogen and Point of View shot of Rob. This is due to the fact that rob was not their I went to his tutor room the morning of the filming session because I had reschedualed the session as I could not obtain the drums on the Thursday. Maybe I need to work on my time management skills as I did not give Rob much notice. However, when I spoke to his tutor he was in assembly and she said she would get the message to him. Later that day she said that she had found Rob and he said he couldn't make it without any reason. He messaged me later saying that he was ill. I said to him that it would have been nice if he had let me know and then let it go to remain professional because I did not want it to interfere with future filming days. This is because later today I will be filming the reaction shots and when the protagonists enter the room. The band won't have to be here thank goodness. Hopefully all goes to plan tonight because I have a duke of Edinburgh meeting at 5 so will need to finish filming by then.

Thinking

So I was thinking that if I had to have all filming done by the end of this week it would be better to have the band for the last chorus instead of the protagonist meeting the band. This is because I have already filmed this as a back up plan as I knew it would be a struggle for all 7 of us to meet up. However, Mr Michie has given us an extension for 3rd April. Therefore, as the rooms are not available this week I will be filming on the 26th or 27th of March and have editing done as soon as possible. Therefore, I can get as many people as possible to evaluate my promo. Meanwhile I need to organise reshooting Luis' close-up because I thought with continuity and everything the drummer had to be behind Luis. However, this disconnects the lead singer from the audience as they are distracted by Oscars floating head as his black top seems to camouflage against the black curtain. Nonetheless, this should be easier now because I will not need to get the drums which seems to be proving difficult to obtain as the year 11's may need it to rehearse for their music exam.

6th day of Filming

Finally, I have completed the narrative filming section so changing teacher was good choice. I should have done it sooner. Never mind that is sorted now. I mean I was only worried that because Mr Ford is not a Drama teacher he would not have been able to pull off the performance required but as Mr Ford is a Media teacher he helped a great deal as he reminded me about reshooting a shot because I had changed the mise-en-scene slightly. Plus, his acting skills were pretty good so I found the correct actor to represent the age.

However, I am a bit annoyed with myself because I did not take photos for my blog but I still have one shooting session. Hence, I will be able to post a picture of my protagonist at least but not their costumes which I am very proud of. I am proud of the costumes because I bought the two ties from a charity shop for 99p each because if Imogen used her old school tie that would have been fine because she is in year 12 she doest need it any more but Rob still needs his as he is in year 11 so it was not advisable because the paint may not come out. Despite the fact the paint says it is washable on the front. Its just better to be safe than sorry because the children's crayola paint says its washable if children get it on their clothes accidentally but what we are doing is purposefully splattering on the clothes. Therefore, it is less likely to come out easily in the wash and the notion the ties were so cheap means it does not matter if I never use them again. I also got the black pair of trousers that Rob is wearing in the promo from a different charity shop for £3.95 which is not bad considering elsewhere e.g Primark they were £15. I also obtained a shirt but unfortunately it did not fit Rob as I was aiming at the time for the clothes to fit Callum. I did ask Rob to come with me to lost property to find him a shirt but he said he had one that he would not have minded getting paint on. Moreover, Imogen had all her clothes that she was not fussed getting paint on.

I have washed the ties and the pair of trousers and unfortunately the paint did not come out that well I am hoping, Imogen and Rob had better luck. Its just lucky that we did not use Robs uniform thinking the paint would come out because he could be without a uniform now and they are quite expensive to replace. Meanwhile, I have started the editing by uploading the footage and am a bit worried because one of the shots I reshot was not there but I think I may be paranoid as I was not looking with much concentration as I wanted to give Miss Collins the camera back as soon as possible. Anyway, I hope to finish film by Thursday provided that Luis can move his Drama Rehearsal to a different day,  Rob can make it as he has a presentation at 7pm on that day and Mr Smith can move the Drama rehearsal to the Java Studio as all other days people have things on which they cannot move.

Digipak layout

I did not realise but the top row has to be upside down so it is able to fold into the photos below

images will be repeated from the of the front as two band band members with skull mask like faces will will be on on one section and the other two on the other. Exactly the same photos will be used to reinforce ideas from the front page.
Colour will be green and blue backgrounds with white splatters of paint to emphasises the brand and connotations of ironic purity.

Conventionally no language or fonts will be used because these sections are inside the CD case and are usually images such as photographs.

Except the Front cover I have not really analysed many pop punk "Digipaks" because the CDs are expensive and I am working on a low budget and there are limited images of the inside and back of CD covers on Google images. So I haven’t analysed much existing media but because of my interest in music I have formed my own instinct of what conventions will be needed. For example of Back page conventional images would be small to fill up the space because my band have only written a few songs so I will probably have a splatter of paint to make sure the brand is consistent again. Plus, I will write a post about my record label logo.
Moreover, colour is mostly black background and white font because these contrast thus stand out so that the audience can see them. Additionally they are iconic for the Sub-genre of Pop-punk as Green Day and My Chemical Romance both use this colour scheme.
Language I will need to be researched in more depth but I know the C and P logos will be needed. What’s more the song names will also be vital to make sure audiences are familiar with the medium.
font will be similar to the front page to make the brand consistent through the medium again. However the copyright font will have to be smaller than the rest to enable the attention to be on the important music. A bar code is also a a massive convention of music videos so that they are available to sell.

The layout will also be fairly conventional with the track titles at the top and the copyright and record label at the bottom.

CD compartment
images will subvert conventions because usually there is a black background but I will once again use the paint to attract the interest of young people who are the target audience of this genre.
Colour will once again be Green, white and blue like the paint in the music video will be green and blue creating synergy.
I will follow conventions and have not text, font or language.
The Splatters of paint will be identical to the splatters on the front page so that the brand is consistent.

I will ensure no images are used in this section because I genuinely think this is typical of Digipaks as conventionally band names are put here. Therefore I will copy this convention of language. The same font will be used from the rest of the album cover and black and white will be used from the back cover to once again synergy is used. I will be aligned the centre and in smaller font towards the bottom I will have a many thanks to the writers and lyricists to ensure the audience are familiar with the medium.

Therefore, should i need to promote my digipak to be produced to sell the digipak as an easy package to present quickly. 

Although I wanted to combine the conventions from My Chemical romance with the skeleton and the stencil hand holding the Grenade in Green day I cannot find a model of a skeleton that will do this shape of an OK sign or an editing tool on photoshop to change a hand to an X-ray. I mean what I really need is an X-Ray machine but this could be dangerous because these emit radiation and could essentially give the person being X-rayed Cancer because I would unnecessarily be damaging the cells in their arm as they have not broken it. Hence, I have changed my idea and would like to combine conventions of images from the pop-punk album covers I have researched. For example, I will take a photo of each band member individually so I can use a green screen more effectively because I will be able to move them to the positions I would like. Therefore, I will copy conventions from Avril Lavigne, Good Charlotte and Weezer who do not have anonymity with Green Day, Taking back Sunday, and The Get Up Kids and combine this with My Chemical Romance by using a non-copy right image of a skull from google images and editing if with photoshop to make the skulls look like masks. I continued to combine my idea with Blink 182 as this has graphics or photos of spattered paint so I will use this idea to link with my music video and create synergy.

To make the colour original I will adapt the photos of splattered paint from pink and light blue to green and dark blue in both the digipak, Music Video and Album advert to ensure the brand is consistent throughout my products. This will also make my products more masculine which rock typically is. I will also have a white background to connote purity because this juxtaposes the idea of rebellious youths which is comical due to the irony. Therefore, i will have black costumes that are the same as the music video and so will create synergy because I wanted them to have suites but this was again too expensive. 

I will copy conventions of language by having the band name, album name and record label on the spines and all except the record label on the front cover as this is conventionally on the back. Therefore, i will copy the lack of language as well because this is all that are conventionally on the front page.

Furthermore, I will subvert the font so that it relates to the band name because conventionally most of my research used san serif fonts but I will use an antiquated because this is a synonym of historic which is a theme of my products. I will have black font for the band name to match the Pop-punk costumes and red font for the album name so that it stand out against the background and connotes danger. I was thinking at one point that the male and female protagonists could be a couple like the Blink 182 promo. Hence the red could have another interpretation of love but they are not trained highly enough for this kind of acting. 

I will try and make the layout as conventional as possible it just depends where the splatters of paint land on the page which I will photograph and because if it is not clear enough to read I will have to rejig the layout so it stands out easily.

Research

I have decided that research should never stop throughout the process. Hence, I found these two videos which have really similar beginnings this is probably because they have the same genre so one was used some its conventions and combined them with another unknown music video. For example both start with of with the female protagonist having surgery and then continue into a dance routine even though they have very different meanings.

I also googled some pop-punk album adverts:

The conventions of these is release date name of band album name and where to buy it. I this case it is a web-site on King of leon it was a shop; HMV.

The conventions continue to be followed as the bands name and album release date is copied. Moreover, the place or website to buy the album is at the bottom again. This time like The Devil Wears Prada there are tour dates as well as how to buy tickets for it. Both are quite similar to the CD front cover to maintain the brand and synergy.

Although I am not doing this genre it is interesting to look at the conventions of the CD advert

MacBooks!

I am very lucky my parents have bought me a MacBook which came in the post today and I am currently using it. My teacher said the technicians will upload adobe for free for me. This will keep my budgeting for my project down a large amount. This is because you have to subscribe to it now for about £40 a year. Hence, my work will be safer as people will not be using my MacBook. Also my friend Hannah's Macbook battery died this week. Hopefully her work will be retrievable as a technician will take it to an Apple store this weekend. Nevertheless, I am more confident taking full responsibility for my work instead of leaving it with someone else. This is provided that I do not leave it on the bus or anything stupid, but I have vowed to guard the MacBook with my life.

However, on the down side I tried to four three times this week but Imogen my female Protagonist wasn't free on Tuesday, the rooms weren't  available wednesday, Rob my male protagonist wasn't available on Thursday and no one could make it on Friday. Luckily, I have about 4 weeks to finish everything, when I have to start the evaluation which I feel is going to be much easier compared to last year. This is due to how much research I have done especially compared to last year. I mean I did quite a bit of research for my 2 minute opening of a thriller but I didn't transfer it to my project. This year I have copied combined and developed ideas from previous products.

Progress - to do list

I am midway through my music video as I have edited the first and second chorus and the beginning of the narrative section. I have incorporated the post-modern theory by breaking the first wall in the performance section. I have further developed this theory by making the layout of the school hyper-real because there is a large amount of space from one room to another in the narrative section and the 'club' is actually a drama studio in the school. Thus, bricolage is used as this is a a collage of footage instead of images. Also, the song it self could be a generic hybrid of pop-punk, indie and . I still need to finish filming as explained earlier I have used a different lower quality camera compared to last year but it is still the same format so I have gained more confidence with setting up the tri-pod. This is due to the idea that we are now working individually so I have had more practise as we had to divide the work up last year in order for everyone to have a go.

Unfortunately, the different camera means different files which are slower and is why my editing is taking so long. Moreover, I transferred all my files to a different laptop at the very beginning of the project and I know that it did not work so I imported the small amount of footage I had again and created a new premier pro file but didn't delete the old ones this also made my MacBook slower so it is a little faster now. What seems to be happening is the sound is playing but the images are not so at the moment I am listening to the footage marking in and then out what I want to import which is working a bit better than before but not drastically. Basically, I have to be patient with it. I have now decided to right click on the timeline of the preview of the footage to mark in and out what I want to import this continues to quicken the pace of editing. I think before, I had something to do while I was waiting for the footage to render as I would go onto Photoshop and do my digipak but now I have realised how long it was taking to load. Plus the more files added the more time it takes to buffer. What I need to do is just get another piece of work and keep switching while waiting for the mac to load but it gets irritating after a while of starting and stopping thought processes. 

Oscar showed me how to use it as he does A-level Photography which just goes to show its not what you know its who you know. I had a challenge taking a photo of the background of my digipak because my memory card was jammed but my friend Alice fixed it.

Editing my digipak has been interesting I learnt how to use an SLR camera and how to use Photoshop. I used Photoshop a few times in GCSE art course but I had forgotten quite a lot of techniques but its just a matter of asking my teacher, peers and looking up things on YouTube. For example I found this video that taught me how to change the green screen into the back ground I wanted: 

However, when I did the above there was a green shadow like halo around my people. I asked my friend Reece and he said to use the eraser and go around the images carefully while zoomed in.

When I changed my idea from a skeleton hand to a half skull half human face my friend Callum showed me this video but I felt it was easier to ask someone to show me so I asked my teacher and I learned that I had to select the layer and adjust the opacity (70%) and size of the skull to fit on the musicians faces. I didn't think about it when I came across the idea but it gives anonymity to the band like masks which combines digipaks such as Avril Lavignes and Weezer who have with Green Day and Blink 182.

I was quite pleased with my self when I worked out how to speed up clips and slow them down for example when the protagonists run out of the detention they did not do it fast enough to get into the storyboarded time of 2 seconds and 12 frames therefore I changed the pace to enable it to fit and it looks quite good considering that shot was when the music starts. Furthermore, I slowed the seconds non diegetic sound down to symbolise that time was going slowly because they were so bored. I still need to adjust the sound especially for the narrative section so that the only thing heard is the non diegetic score of the clock.
I still need to change the sound so the background diegetic sound is not heard but the ticking non diegetic sound is heard. I also need to make sure the lip syncing is better because the basic skill like framing and so could decrease my grade considerably.

Props

I made these for the last chorus when the protagonists join the band but I have realised the reaction shot story boarded will capture the teachers desk piano and white board that  are in the drama studio I will be using but I'm sure I can work it out and cover it all up. It will all be fine as long as I get everything done in the next 5 weeks. 

Paint scene

I randomly found this video and I think it captures the what would look amazing with the paint but I do not have the location for it as I can't get paint on the school class room. Also unfortunately Rob has a basket ball match today and tomorrow so it looks like I'm going to have to cancel filming again which I do not like doing at all. Especially as my dead line has passed. 

Record label logos

I need to design my old record label logo as I have to use non copy right images these are examples

I was thinking about combining these 2 ideas and calling my record label back street records and copying the conventions of the black and  white but challenging the angle that it is positioned and making it angled to the left.

unfortunately this would copy a record company that already exists so I will probably change my idea to backstreet credits with the same idea. I Googled this and found no existing copy with the same name.

Extension of rough-cut deadline

Luckily, Mr Michie will give me an extension I do not know until when but I will film the rest of the narrative section this Thursday and The bands chorus section on the first Monday back as the room probably won't be in use as my group won' be using it as our exam will be finished.

However, issues have occurred in my footage for example I forgot that Imogen had to turn around in her close up shot to look at the clock but that should be easily fixed on Thursday. Fortunately, I decided to swap the protagonists as in the animatic the male character was on the right but in the footage Imogens on the right. Thus, if I needed to re-shoot the Imogens close up she is most likely to turn up. Also it does not spoon feed the viewers into thinking the target audience is male as in the narrative section the female protagonist is predominant compared to the male. However, even though this is counteracted in the performance section females could still like the band because of sexual attraction because the males are young. Perhaps too young as I have said already if I were to redo the project I would have chosen older musicians as if they were reflecting on their childhood. Nevertheless, pop punks main audience is 17-25 and considering all the males in the band are 18 it appeals to the lower end of the target market making them quite niche.So my ancillary task is going well and I will book the mac out a he end of today to edit what I have over the week end and finish the Digipak at least.

Editing is coming along slowly but surely because it is taking so long to render the shots. This is due to the fact that I filmed all the bands shots all the way through the song without cuts. Thus it has a large amount of frames to render when I import just one shot into to time line. I have adjusted the clock shots to make them go slower as a metaphor for time going fast when you have fun but obviously the students are not having fun in the detention but when they start having fun the pace quickens due to shorter shots and the pace of the music.  

Now it is the 13th Feb and I wanted to film the last chorus with the band and the protagonists but unfortunately Oscar is working and if I can't get the whole band it won't work. So I will have to leave it until next term. I was hoping that I could fit it in between the end of school and the trip because school finishes at 15:40 and the coaches pick us up at 16:45 which gives us more than enough time. Never mind I'll get it done eventually I think this is going to be the most difficult bit because I need to get 7 people together all of which are doing different things at different times. Then again the paint scene will prove difficult as well as I will have to try and not get paint everywhere.

5th day of filming

Yes! finally I have got a section of my narrative done. Unfortunately, I had to miss a performing arts rehearsal even though my exam is this Tuesday the dead line for my rough cut is sooner; Monday. Hence it takes full priority in order to finish filming. However, I completely forgot I still need to film the whole band with the protagonists and I'm filming the rest of the narrative section today which means I can either do tomorrow after school which no one will want to do considering its Friday Monday is the dress run for my performing arts Exam Tuesday is the Exam which means Monday I will be rehearsing until six again and Tuesday I will be at the Beck theatre all day. I may be able to film it Wednesday but my self and Imogen have a theatre trip to see Henry V in London for English literature A-level. we are getting a coach there so we may be able to film while we wait for the coach it depends what time we are leaving and if we have time to eat something before we go. Therefore, that only leaves Thursday next week because then its Friday again and everyone is busy on Fridays. Also the school is not available on the weekends I thought it would be easier to use the school because that means we do not need to travel anywhere but it just makes it more difficult to film stuff as we cannot come in on holidays without a member of staff - the end of next week is half term which is really irritating. Nevertheless, I Saturday to finish editing the footage I have got as I will sign the mac out over the weekend and then Sunday I am practising at the Beck again for performing arts. I was thinking it may be easier if the Chikara is free to meet at 8:20 in the morning if people could get the earlier bus in. It's asking a lot from teenagers so I won't get my hopes up but the year 13s are use the room on Thursdays so it doesn't give me much choice.

My ancillary task is well under way but I may need to retake Oscar and Luis' photos because squeezing them on the the front cover of the Digipak has proven difficult I may just need to make them small but the problem is more of the way their feet are positioned. I think in my research I did too much on the front cover and not enough on the rest of the digipak so I may need to go back on that. Ok so I Googled digipaks and only four panelled ones came up I googled six panelled ones and guess what I was sent to a link which sent me to a blog so I decided to look in the course work archive of past students work.

The bit I have missed in my research is the photos I will probably divide my band with either a photo of Luis and Oscar on one side and Josh and Jonny with the splatters of paint in the back ground but this may be too busy I will try and test my ideas before cancelling them out. I could go the other way as to just have one of them blue and green but this may be too simple thus I might meet in the middle and have to band members separated with one green background and the other blue.

This is another example of the green days digipak  I will have the back of the of mine either black or red with the text vise versa. Its decided front page all band members with splattered paint one square will have just splattered paint another just 2 band with green background the same again but with the 2 other band members and blue back ground back page music production company with list of songs with black font and red background to match the font on the front page.

Project continues

Ok slightly freaking out because my laptops gone missing it should be fine the year 12s have probably signed it out so it should turn up but now that is stopping my progress. Its just irritating that the media laptops are not linked with the schools hard-drive because then I could use any computer in the school and my work would be more secure. This is teaching me a good lesson with backing up my work but the thing is I haven't got enough room on my memory stick so I may need to get a hard-drive of my own. This is really annoying because it is stopping progress with editing. I am going to film the class room scene on wednesday and the paint scene on thursday if it kills me because I need next weeks time to edit my rough cut together as my deadline is approaching thick and fast. I now have nothing to do for an hour because I don't have anything as everything from the raw footage to the ancillary tasks photos are on that one mac. I can't sit here and do nothing so I spoke to my teacher and he said its up to us to keep things safe and if people don't put things back its not he's problem... but its my problem and I'm stuck now...

What do I do if it doesn't turn up? right all the footage is still on the camera as I didn't delete it so I just need to look on all them cameras and upload them all to another mac then re-edit all the editing I've already done. but I deleted the photos off the SLR cameras so I will have to retake them photos and photoshop them again. Lastsly I will back it all up! Although, this will take time I'm glad I didn't do what I was told and deleted the raw footage from the cameras as I would have to reshoot everything again. and yes I used 2 different numbered cameras so 1 has the first section of footage and another has another bit of footage which is another reason I wanted to keep the camera Mr Michie's office to keep all the footage together. I think there are about 8 HD cameras in Miss Collin's office which could have my shots on. I am probably letting my imagination run away with me but its definitely worth thinking about.

Successes and failures

Right I've finally got the photo of josh the second guitarist in the bands music video despite all of fate preventing us from meeting as he was ill for a few days, I have duke of Edinburgh meetings, then he had band practise and I've had performing arts rehearsals as Josh's music exam and my practical exam is on the 11th February because he is playing the music for the performance. This wouldn't have happened in the real world of work as we would each be working on one project at a time instead of having all the course work and exam deadlines appearing at the same time which annoyingly always seems to be at the end of a term. 

Even though people are probably bored of hearing me complain about this project I have to explain my problems I've faced in production in order to get a good grade. Rob unfortunately could not attend today's filming session for reasons not yet clarified. I'm sure he has a valid explaination but it's just so unfair when my grade is based on team work. Everything was ready I had the room the equptment and the female protagonist but not the male protagonist. My deadline is fast approaching and hopefully the protagonists can make it tomorrow because I want to split up my filming sessions as I know I won't be able to film the antagonists and protagonists shots all on one session of filming and we can't stop in the middle of the paint scene because it will mean we'll have to wait for the costumes to be washed covered in paint again and then filmed which will take extra time and effect the continuity of the product. However, my ancillary task is well underway. 

Editing

Unfortunately, I have not been able to progress in my project that much recently because I think I need to become more organised. This is because I need to make sure I ask for permission when I need props, actors and rooms. For example I was only lucky that my actors do A-level music other wise I would not have been able to access the drums as I did not give enough notice to Mr Munster the head of music at the school Chalfonts community college. Also I need to redo my shot list as it is quite unprofessional of me to keep rescheduling all the time. However, if I was making any form of media in the real world of work then I would pay my actors and they wouldn't have any prior commitments such as A-levels, Gcse's, after school clubs, socializing or work. This is due to the fact that they are volunteering and would commit more if they had a reward which is why I will be rewarding them with pizza at the end of filming.

Nonetheless, I do understand josh has been ill over the past few days which is why I will b taking his photo for the ancillary task on Monday at break, despite the fact that I have rescheduled that Several times. Meanwhile, I have a large amount of editing to do with the performance part of the music video. I just need to remember to get the SLR Monday morning because I will need to take the equipment back to PVA (which by the way stands for the photography video animation department which I forgot to mention before) every time I have finished with it and then collect it when I need it again. I kept some equipment for about a week because I kept rearranging filming times as things keep getting in the way such as parents evening yesterday which meant I couldn't use the room. The biggest problem is how busy everyone is I have performing arts after school every Monday and Tuesday until 6pm except this Tuesday because I have a university interview and then Mr Smith my antagonist has rehearsals with year 13 drama on Thursdays and people have plans on Fridays. I thought about getting another teacher who can do Thursdays but then remembered I book a driving lesson on Thursday as I knew we would not be able to film on that day. This is because Luis my lead singer does Drama and is in year 13 so wouldn't have been able to make filming either. I think if I were to make this promo again from the start I would have asked male teachers to be the band as this would have broadened my target audience and followed conventions more.

4th Day of filming

Unfortunately, Josh didn't come to our meeting yesterday to take the photo for my CD front cover and album advert so I took the photos separately with an SLR Nikon digital camera for the the best quality. I have splattered blue and white paint on a piece of white paper and for the background of my ancillary task to connote masculinity and copy conventions from former pop punk artists.

I have also decided that there is a significant difference in camera quality so I have stuck with the one I used first in order to keep the same lighting and maintain continuity. However, this has now caused me a huge problem as I have to use the same camera from the PVA departments and the technician isn't happy about it because it means I will have to borrow the camera until the project is over. The thing is I thought she said that there was more than enough cameras there when I returned her tripod and the camera batteries. Nevertheless, I have got the footage of the close up of the lead singer and drummer even if it isn't the best quality camera the performance section is complete unless I need to re-shoot some stuff which maybe likely.

I tried to organise a filming session after school today even though I only have one lesson and would have had to hang around for 4 hours, because my antagonist is usually available on Wednesdays but today he isn't. He is on Friday but my male protagonist isn't so I am going to film some shots of my protagonists tomorrow and then add my antagonist later to split up the shots more. This is due to the idea that I have found it takes longer to film footage than I originally thought.

3rd day of filming

Ok I filmed a mid shot of the 2 guitarists of the band individually and then a close up of the guitar itself being played by Jonny the lead guitarist to get more detail of the music. Unfortunately, they are just miming but due to their education of music through A-Level they have the basic knowledge to mime with perfection. Thus, I play the song through the amps of the studio they are playing in so they could keep in time with the music and each other. This was done the last time as well but I was talking to my friend and she said the way I have to lip sync it is for the lead singer to mime the words in slow motion it shouldn't matter too much with the long shots but when I do the close up of the front man he will have to know the words a lot better than he did last time. Although I had not done a shooting schedule for this date it went well as I only needed the guitarists because the close ups meant no one else on stage was seen. However, on Tuesday I will need Oscar and the drums in the back ground so that continuity is kept in the close up of the front man Luis. Otherwise the drummer will disappear and reappear several times throughout the music video which will be disorientating for the viewers. Whereas no one is behind the guitarists including the amps as they are much lower than the shot.

I have uploaded all the shots but I may have replaced some with the same name. They are still on the cameras so there's nothing to worry about. On Monday I will sort out the shots put them in the right order and cut the shots to match the animatic and compare the quality of camera, Thus, I will know whether I need to continue using the worse quality camera but to be honest I may just reshoot them shots with the better camera to make my product the best that it can be. Hopefully, on Tuesday lunch I will be able to take a photo of the band in PVA with the Green screen and SLR Camera if everything goes to plan then I will be able to edit the background with photographed splatters of paint in the background and photoshop the transparency of non-copy righted skulls for the band members heads. This way on Tuesday after school Luis and Oscar will have their costumes to do their close ups.

2nd day of filming

On the first day of filming Mr Michie's room was locked so I had to
get one from PVA this was a different quality to Mr Michie's. Thus, while
 watching the video there may be a significant difference in lighting
 so people be able to notice different types of cameras were used. Hence, to
see if there is a difference in the types of cameras I loaned another tripod
to see if the normal HD cameras that I used last year contrast the shots I did last
week that much. Hopefully the different cameras will not be noticeable when
 I upload them today.

this is my band in their costumes with their props behind them I did not
use microphones one because they were not accessible and 2 I was copying the
conventions of  Beyonce's if I were a boy bringing in more elements. The lighting
looks better in the video than this photo but I felt it copied Green days and
Paramore's band section of their videos which I analysed earlier.

Next filming session I will be today at lunch because when the lights are up and
the blinds are down it looks like its evening outside which it should be connoting
a really late detention. This way the band is more likely going to be able to meet.
However, it won't be dark forever in the afternoons so I need to figure out how I'm
going to get street light for the narrative section of the video when the antagonist
is chasing the protagonists out side because when I did the tilt up establishing shot of
the first day of filming it was really dark so I may need to reshoot that shot with a little
more light so I can see the logo of the school and the characters facial expressions
more clearly.

Pomo

This band Gorillaz is the most post-modern band out there because it isn't a band at all there are 2 artists Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett who created avatars called 2-D, Noodle, Russel, and Merdoc. This video follows the conventional pattern of verse to chorus, breaks the forth wall and is generally quite interesting so I thought I'd blog about it as it is a case study for my exam. This is due to the fact that Gorillaz copy, combine and transform other music and videos to create their products. For example there is a generic hybrid as electric rap and motown music is combined.



Memes are genes but ideas because they copy combine and transform. Remixes are really postmodern as they are tweaked only slightly so that people recognize where both sections are from. e.g. Dora the explorer. South Park parodied Christian Bale making it pomo in its own right. Merchandise was even remixed such as T-shirts. The reason this process happened so quickly was because it was so mainstream that it had almost no where else to go as it had become as popular as it was going to get.

New Actors

So I have decided that Callum welsh looks too old to be in my music video because I need a 15-16 year old looking male. Therefore, I will not be filming today and will have to reschedule for the 21st and 23rd of Jan if my protagonists and antagonist can make it. I have spoken to my drama teachers and they told me to contact a Rob Woods who would be interested in being apart of the product. So I went to the gym as my teachers said thats where Rob usually is he wasn't there so I was going to ask my tutor if he could e-mail rob through the school e-mail but it turns out he's his English teacher so can ask rob directly which is lucky. Also Reece cannot do the 16th and 14th so I have asked Jonny morris but he hasn't got back to me yet.

First Filming Day

On tuesday callum did not have his costume so I did all the shots that did not include people these included the establishing shots of the corridor and the clock. Thus when I come to filming with people the actors will not have to wait around. Today I will upload the footage of this filming and put them on premier pro for safe keeping to start editing my rough cut. Moreover, even though my actor Mr Juilan Smith cannot make it after school today I will film the students shots. This is because yesterday I managed to raid the charity shops in order to find Callum a school uniform. The cost came to £7.95 which is a fair amount considering I got 2 school ties, a white shirt, and clack trousers. Hopefully Callum will have shaved today as he hadn't on Tuesday which made him look older and less like a student. we though of using a couple of pupils from the younger years but that would mean I would probably need permission from the parents and I would also need to buy them another uniform to get paint all over.

Luckily I have complete permission for my protagonists to have a paint fight in the art room as long as the room looks exactly the same as when miss Blick left it she doesn't mind. This means that I will have to clean up everything after which I was planning to do anyway. I also have permission from Mr Smith to use the Shikara next week with the lights on the 14th and 16th. So at least some aspects of the project are coming together nicely.

Ok so Callum hasn't shaved but I've bought his costume so it would be a waste of money if he refuses to shave because "its part of his identity". My mum said that she would pay for pizza for the people that help me out for my music video as payment for my actors but this bring didn't work either. so I don't know what to do today. Whether I should cancel my filming today or use a different actor another day because another convention of music videos in general is to have the male protagonist as the lead singer in the band for example weezer. However, Luis has a large amount of work on because he has to retake his drama, has a lead role in his Performing Arts Exam and I don't know whether he has a costume so the best bet is to ask him if he has school uniform like clothes that he does not mind getting paint on. I thought about it an if callum doesn't fit into the costume he has black jeans but he doesn't want to get paint on them. Thats when i though of making it a water fight instead of paint but then my ancillary task won't work. I am quite worried about this because I do not have a mock up of this yet which I need to get started on as soon as possible.

Another huge annoying problem is that I borrowed a camera from PVA on Tuesday because Mr Michie's room was locked. The cameras are different so the quality and lighting of the cameras will be different. Hopefully it won't be so obvious so I will be able to use the better quality HD sony cameras from now on. I will have to compare the footage and reshoot the establishing shots if necessary.

Problems

Right, so there seems to be a bit of a problem Mr Smith cannot do the 9th of Jan therefore we will need to cancel that day. I was thinking of just doing Mr Smiths shots on the 7th but the protagonists will be covered in paint at the end of his shots. This will be difficult to capture due to the following facts

1 I do not have much paint

2 it will be difficult to get the costumes washed by Thursday if we get paint all over them on Tuesday (I was thinking if I used a large amount of jump cutting this would work)
3 There are art exams on the second week back so I probably will not be able to use the room required (I have not yet asked for specific dates yet I will ask tomorrow)
4 I'm not certain but there may also be a Drama exam on the 14th or 16th so I may not be able to use the room for the band - it looks like I may need to reschedule.

I mean thinking out loud I could just do all the shots with the teacher on Tuesday which may be easier I have counted them and there are 25 shots if we work quickly it might be possible.  Unfortunately, I cannot do Wednesday because I have a university interview. Friday might be possible but most people will want to get home at the end of the week and today is still the Christmas holiday and most Mondays I have a performing arts rehearsal until 5.
